This is how you cancel a DirecTV account when someone dies
DirecTV provides direct broadcast satellite service to individuals and businesses. They are one of the most popular satellite providers in the U. S. Regardless of what kind of subscription a person may have had, DirecTV's process is the same. We also have instructions for transferring account owners, which is helpful for spouses looking to keep their entertainment the same.
Required information
- Last four digits of the account holder’s Social Security number
- Death certificate
- Account number or amount of the account’s most recent payment
How to cancel a DirecTV subscription
Changes to the account, even cancellation, will require contacting customer service in the following ways:
- Call 1-800-531-5000 between 8 a.m. and 10 p.m. EST
- DirecTV Live Chat service
How to transfer DirecTV subscription
DirecTV will transfer account billing responsibilities given the account is in good standing. Specifically, that means:
- Your account must be active for 60+ days.
- Your account status must be current with no past-due balance.Note: You're still responsible for any account charges until the transfer is completed.
- If you have combined billing, you need to separate your services, such as AT&T Internet, Phone, U-verse TV, DirecTV, and wireless, before transferring all or part of the account to a new owner. The accounts can be re-combined by calling us after 2 full billing periods.
- Make sure this account is not an AT&T PREPAID or company account.
If the above conditions are satisfied then contact DirecTV using one of the following methods:
- Call 1-800-531-5000 between 8 a.m. and 10 p.m. EST
- DirecTV Live Chat service
What if I don't have the required information?
DirecTV doesn't have online resources dedicated to this process specifically, so you'll have refer to DirecTV's Terms and Conditions page for reference.
We then recommend contacting DirecTV using one of the following two methods:
- Call 1-800-531-5000 between 8 a.m. and 10 p.m. EST
- DirecTV Live Chat service

Atticus' Legacy Review of DirecTV's closing account process after someone dies = 2/10 stars
DirecTV gets less than stellar marks in Atticus' Legacy Review of their closing accounts process, mainly because of how little they've thought about this process. Back in 2019 DirecTV charged a 102-year-old, longtime customer with a late fee because she ended her contract prematurely when she died. Since then, DirecTV updated their policy to allow for such occurrences to be exempt from charging a fee. The only problem is that seems to be all they've done in that regard. There's no clear process for transferring an account, which will come up in many cases involving spouses. They don't have web resources either, and every process ends with having to contact customer service. Hopefully, after receiving this less than perfect mark they'll write one for their clients.
