The social insurance number (SIN) is the Canadian equivalent of the EIN and is a 9 digits code to access government programs and benefits. Executors will need the social insurance number throughout the estate settlement process as a prerequisite to getting account access and submitting forms. For example, the final tax returns of the deceased will require the social insurance number before the Canada Revenue Agency will accept the submission. Given that executors cannot complete estate administration until the final tax return is approved, it is very important to have the details of the social insurance number (SIN).
