A bequest is the act of leaving personal assets or property to an individual or charity through the wishes of the last will and testament. A bequest can be specific or general. A specific bequest is clearly defined such as leaving a car to a beneficiary. General bequests are more broad in that they represent a percentage share of the general assets of the estate. For example, a general bequest may state that the estate wishes to divide the assets evenly between the children of the deceased.
