An examination postmortem that seeks to discover the cause of death. It should be noted that autopsies are not commonly required however if selected they should be conducted very shortly after the death has occurred. Depending on your jurisdiction, the law may require autopsies for suspicious deaths that are sudden, unexpected or include criminal considerations. In extremely rare cases, if the cause of death is in question an exhumation autopsy will occur which removes the body from burial to be examined.
